Florianopolis, Brazil paradise south of the equator
Florianopolis, Brazil is described as paradise by the people who live here. It’s the place where Brazilains move to when they get tired of the violence and congestion in the big cities. Called Floripa for short, this island is one of the richest cities in Brazil and has 42 beaches (Inglesas, Praia Mole, Joaquina, Jurrere Internacional are just some of them). It’s a major tourist destination and has something to do for everybody: Kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, scuba diving, paragliding, ocean fishing, trekking, surfing and kite surfing. Also, The New York Times voted Florianopolis THE party destination for 2009.
Come to Florianopolis between December and Carnaval. That’s when you’ll find the beaches filled with Brazilians looking to have a good time. Grab a Coca Nut or Brahma Beer and peak at the infamous dental floss bikinis. Be sure to try the Caipirinha. Made with Cachaça, lime, and TONS of sugar; Caipirinha is Brazil’s national drink.
A typical day during high season consists of staying all day on the beach. When night time rolls be prepared to party. Lagoa is one destination of beach goers. This place is like a surfer village but with lots of clubs. Jurere is like the South Beach of Brazil; where one can find the rich, jet-set crowd.
