Cancun Travel
Cancun is Mexico’s largest resort destination, far outshining Acapulco as North America’s top holiday vacation nation. If the images of white sandy beaches, clear blue water, jet skiing, diving and lounging by the pool are not enough of a draw, add to that image sensational night clubs with a larger than life shows and a plethora of ancient Mayan ruins and you have a sense of what Cancun is all about experience.
Jutting into the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is at the very tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, on land that was used as a haven for sea pirates. The resort town was built in the mid-1970 in the vicinity of, and in some cases on top of valued old Mayan ruins. The main drag is a string of beautiful Art Deco and high-rise hotels, followed by a series of night clubs, ranging from only posh or fancy-like industrial to a warmer more intimate discotequas groovy with their own local flavor.
Cancun’s name alone brings thoughts of extravagant parties and Spring Break, but make sure to take it easy, so you can enjoy a day trip to the nearby Mayan ruins with a clear mind and an inquisitive attitude. The most famous ruins in Chichen Itza in the center of the peninsula. Inhabited from 445 BC to 1204 AD, then mysteriously abandoned, these ruins are centered on one pyramid with steps that lead through giant snake heads. Visit during one of the equinoxes and the shadows appear as if a giant snake is descending the pyramid. Closer to Cancun, Tulum is a popular destination Maya overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. There are at least ten other major archaeological sites accessible from Cancun by tour operators.
Cancun, and then some
On a daily basis, seasoned guides lead enthusiastic walkers through the jungle to discover where the wild things are. Also available are horse rides along the coast and the mainland. A short ferry or plane ride away is Cozumel, Mexico’s largest Caribbean island and one of the world’s hottest spots for diving, not to mention that there are a number of companies that offer swimming with dolphins. If true escape is what you’re looking for, Isla de Mujeres is your answer. Fifteen minutes from Cancun by boat, this small tropical asylum is a peaceful retreat from resort life on the mainland. Cycling is very popular on the island, as well as snorkeling and chating to the occasional pirate. Take a look at the mysterious stone statues of semi-dressed women left behind by the Maya.
